The lights dimmed as the curtains rose, revealing a vibrant stage and the cast of “13: The Musical.” This show, based on the book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, tells the story of Evan Goldman, a 13-year-old boy who is forced to move from New York City to Indiana after his parents divorce.
As the first notes of the opening number rang out, I was transported into Evan’s world. The music, written by Jason Robert Brown, was catchy and memorable – I couldn’t help but tap my foot along. The lyrics were clever and witty, perfectly capturing the anxiety and excitement of adolescence.
The cast was filled with young talent – many of whom went on to successful careers in Hollywood. Graham Phillips (who played Evan) has since starred in shows like “The Good Wife” and “Riverdale,” while Ariana Grande (who played cheerleader Charlotte) has become a pop superstar.
But it wasn’t just the stars that made this show special. The ensemble as a whole was energetic and engaging, bringing each scene to life with their enthusiasm. It was clear that they all shared a love for what they were doing.
One standout moment was “Brand New You,” a song about reinventing oneself that featured a fierce dance number and some hilarious one-liners. Another favorite was “Opportunity,” which showcased Evan’s vulnerability as he tried to fit in with his new classmates.
But “13” wasn’t all fun and games – there were deeper themes at play as well. The show tackled issues like peer pressure, loyalty, and self-discovery with nuance and sensitivity.
In fact, it’s this emotional depth that makes “13” stand out from other teenage musicals. While shows like “High School Musical” or “Grease” may offer escapism through cheerleading routines or bubblegum pop songs, “13” never shies away from the harsh realities of growing up. Even the happy moments are tinged with bittersweet nostalgia for a time that will never come again.
All of this is captured in Brown’s score, which ranges from upbeat pop-rock anthems to heartfelt ballads. The standout track, “The Lamest Place in the World,” captures Evan’s disillusionment with his new surroundings perfectly.
But it’s not just the music that makes “13” so memorable – it’s the way it all comes together on stage. The choreography by Christopher Gattelli was playful and energetic, perfectly capturing the spirit of adolescence. And although there were plenty of fun dance numbers, there were also moments of stillness and introspection that allowed the characters to shine through.
Of course, no show is perfect. There were some moments where the pacing dragged a bit, or where the dialogue felt a little too on-the-nose. And while some may criticize “13” for being too niche (after all, not everyone can relate to being a 13-year-old), I would argue that its themes are universal.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that “13: The Musical” is a modern classic. It may not have had a long run on Broadway (it closed after just 105 performances), but its impact has been felt far beyond New York City. With its catchy tunes and relatable characters, “13” has become a beloved fixture of high school theater programs across the country.
As for me? I left the theater feeling energized and inspired – like I had just experienced something truly special. And as I walked out into the bustling streets of Times Square, I couldn’t help but hum one of Brown’s infectious melodies under my breath: “A little bit of music makes me feel things I’ve never felt before…”
