In a world filled with constant chaos and never-ending responsibilities, it is always refreshing to sit back and enjoy a good movie. Recently, I stumbled upon the charming romantic-comedy, “The Perfect Date,” which left me completely smitten. It transported me into a magical world of romance that made me wish I had a time machine to travel back to my teenage years and experience the same butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling.
Set in the picturesque suburbs of Connecticut, “The Perfect Date” tells the story of Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo), an ambitious high school student who dreams of attending Yale University. He soon discovers a unique way to earn some extra cash by offering his services as the perfect date for any occasion, from proms to weddings.
While Brooks initially takes on these dates purely for monetary gain, he eventually realizes that he is falling in love with Celia Lieberman (Laura Marano), his best friend’s cousin who also happens to be his toughest client. As their relationship progresses, Brooks finds himself juggling multiple dates and facing difficult choices about what truly matters in life.
The film is an uplifting and delightful coming-of-age tale that will leave you grinning from ear-to-ear. The screenplay was written by Steve Bloom and Randall Green, adapted from Bloom’s novel “The Stand-In” which was released in 2017. The film was directed by Chris Nelson whose previous works include “Date Night” and “My Dead Ex.”
The remarkable chemistry between Noah Centineo and Laura Marano brought magic to the screen. Their on-screen dynamic was playful, endearing, and downright adorable. With this pairing leading the charge, it is no wonder why this film continues to receive critical acclaim.
In addition to our two lovebirds’ noteworthy performances were two other notable cast members. Odiseas Georgiadis portrays Murph, Brooks’ best friend who always has his back no matter how crazy the situation gets. Camila Mendes shines as Shelby Pace, a popular girl who hires Brooks as her date for the evening but ends up providing him with a much-needed reality check.
The film’s script is full of witty one-liners that are reminiscent of Mark Twain’s work. One such line occurs at the start of the film when Brooks introduces himself by saying, “I’m not your typical leading man. More like best friend material.” This line sets the tone for the rest of the movie and perfectly captures Brooks’ self-awareness and charm.
“The Perfect Date” was not without its share of challenges during production. In fact, production was halted for a week in August 2018 due to Hurricane Florence. Despite this setback, filming resumed shortly afterward and was completed in September 2018.
The movie boasts an impressive score composed by Laura Karpman who has worked on several notable projects throughout her career. The score adds a layer of richness to the film’s emotional depth and perfectly captures the emotions that Brooks experiences throughout his journey.
Since its release in April 2019, “The Perfect Date” has received widespread popularity and critical acclaim. While it remains one of Netflix’s most popular movies, it is also slowly gaining popularity beyond streaming platforms too.
Overall, “The Perfect Date” is an enjoyable and heartwarming romantic comedy that will sweep you off your feet. The incredible cast brings a level of authenticity to their characters that you cannot help but root for them throughout the movie. It may borrow familiar tropes from classic teen films from past decades but it does so in a way that feels refreshing and modern.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a fun-filled night with your significant other or just need an uplifting pick-me-up after a long day at work then “The Perfect Date” should be on top of your watchlist!
