Review
Oh boy, let me tell you about Space Chimps! This film is an absolute blast from start to finish. From the unique storyline to the lovable characters, it’s hard not to fall in love with this movie.
The plot revolves around a group of chimpanzees who are sent on a mission to space when their human counterparts fail. Led by Ham III (voiced by Andy Samberg), grandson of the first chimpanzee astronaut, the team includes Luna (Cheryl Hines) and Titan (Patrick Warburton). Together, they must stop an evil alien dictator from taking over the universe.
The film was released in 2008 and was directed by Kirk DeMicco. While it didn’t receive much critical acclaim, it became a hit with audiences and grossed over $64 million worldwide.
One interesting fact about Space Chimps is that it was inspired by real-life research done on chimpanzees in space. In the 1960s, NASA sent several chimps on space missions to test the effects of space travel on living creatures.
The voice acting in this film is also top-notch. Andy Samberg brings his signature humor to Ham III and Cheryl Hines shines as Luna. Patrick Warburton delivers some hilarious one-liners as Titan and Jeff Daniels is great as the villainous Zartog.
While the animation may not be Pixar-level quality, it still holds up well today and is visually stunning at times. The special effects used to bring outer space to life are particularly impressive.
One standout scene in Space Chimps involves a zero-gravity dance party featuring disco music and colorful lights. It’s hard not to smile while watching this fun sequence.
The film’s score was composed by Chris P. Bacon (yes, really) and is a mix of orchestral music with some funky beats thrown in for good measure. The soundtrack also features several classic disco songs like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.
Despite its success, Space Chimps didn’t receive any major awards. However, it did spawn a sequel in 2010 titled Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Unfortunately, the sequel wasn’t quite as well-received as the original.
One of the criticisms of Space Chimps is that it’s a bit formulaic and predictable. The story follows a similar pattern to other animated films where a group of misfits must band together to save the day. However, the charming characters and hilarious one-liners more than make up for any lack of originality.
Overall, Space Chimps is a fun and entertaining film that’s perfect for kids and adults alike. It’s not groundbreaking cinema by any means, but it doesn’t need to be. Sometimes all you need is a silly space adventure with some lovable chimps to brighten your day.
